A Tollcross Learner Who Left No Stone Unturned and Delivered a Brilliant Drive on Test Day
Eleanor began lessons with me last summer, having already completed some driving with a previous instructor. When we first went out together, the priority was to get a clear picture of where she was — what skills she had already developed and where there was room to build further.
Living near Tollcross in Edinburgh, Eleanor was thrown into the deep end from the very first lesson. As soon as we left her street, we were straight into busy urban traffic and a constant stream of challenges. Far from being a problem, this turned out to be brilliant preparation. It sharpened up her anticipation and planning skills in busy conditions in a way that quieter roads simply cannot replicate.
After that first lesson, it was clear Eleanor had a solid foundation to build on. The main area we focused on early was clutch control — once that is smooth and consistent, so much else in driving tends to fall into place naturally. Eleanor worked hard on it and the improvement was noticeable quickly.
Between lessons, Eleanor was making great use of an Arnold Clark dual control learner car to get additional practice time in. What impressed me was that she always went out with a clear plan of what she was going to work on. That kind of focused, purposeful practice makes a real difference — it is far more effective than simply going through the motions.
As Eleanor’s driving came together, we introduced mock tests into the routine — practice, mock test, more practice, another mock test. It was a thorough and methodical approach that suited her well. She genuinely left no stone unturned in her preparation.
With everything in good shape, lessons were paused while Eleanor waited for a test date — something many Edinburgh learners will relate to given the current waiting times. Then I received a message from Eleanor letting me know she had secured a date at the Currie test centre in Edinburgh in August. We resumed lessons a few weeks before the test for some final fine-tuning, and everything felt exactly where it needed to be.
On the morning of the test, we arrived at the Currie test centre and got settled. The hard work had already been done — all Eleanor needed to do was drive the same way she had been driving throughout our recent sessions together. And that is exactly what she did.
Eleanor passed her driving test at the Currie test centre, receiving compliments from the examiner on her driving. A brilliant result and a thoroughly deserved one. Well done Eleanor!
