Awareness and Planning Edinburgh Driving Lesson
In this video that I made I look at a busy urban area that will require a bit of planning as you drive though. I have used Morningside in Edinburgh as its a great example of this, if you live in the Edinburgh area and are looking to perfect these skills then I would highly recommend using it after watching this video.
The sort of things that you will need to consider when driving through a congested area like this is how everything in the distance is going to affect you, will you need to take any action or not. Pedestrian crossings should only change to red if someone pushes the button so if you have a clear view and nobody is anywhere to be seen then it wont change. Yellow boxes you don’t want to stop in unless you are turning right, so make sure you can see space for your vehicle over the other side of the box before entering. When following a bus leave a bigger gap than usual as its likely to stop somewhere, look for people at the bus stop up the road ahead, or if you can see inside the bus look for people getting up. On some buses like in the video a stopping light downstairs on the right inside illuminates when someone rings the bell giving you warning that the bus will be stopping at the next bus stop. Look for signals on the vehicles ahead, if someone is turning right they can only turn if there is no oncoming traffic, so if there is they are going to stop, is there room for you to pass on the left? or are you going to have to stop also?
All these small things help you become more aware and when the bus then stops its not a surprise you have a plan which with practice you will execute very smoothly.
