A massive congratulations to Joe from Penicuik, Midlothian, who passed his driving test on his very first attempt at Currie Driving Test Centre on Tuesday 3rd November 2026!
Every learner driver has their own story, and Joe’s journey towards gaining his full driving licence certainly had a few twists and turns along the way!
From early morning driving lessons before work to building confidence, tackling mock driving tests and even having his car written off while it was parked, Joe had plenty of challenges to overcome.
But his determination and positive attitude never disappeared, and I’m absolutely delighted that all his hard work has finally paid off!
A Fresh Start with Driving Lessons in Penicuik
Originally from Manchester, Joe moved to Penicuik in Midlothian with his partner.
He’d previously taken driving lessons in Manchester and continued learning after moving to Scotland. However, when he contacted me, he explained that he wanted to build his confidence and develop greater consistency with his driving.
Joe worked long hours for a catering company based in Loanhead, so finding a suitable time for driving lessons was important.
I managed to arrange a regular Wednesday morning slot with him, starting at the rather early time of 6:45 am and finishing at 8:45 am, allowing Joe to get to work for 9 o’clock.
Those early Wednesday mornings soon became a familiar part of our routine!
Getting the Feet Working Together
During our first few driving lessons, I noticed that Joe would benefit from spending some time refining his clutch and accelerator coordination.
Having learned with different driving instructors previously, he’d developed a few habits that I felt we could improve.
One particular area involved the sequence of using the accelerator and clutch when moving away.
I wanted Joe to develop a consistent technique of applying the accelerator before gradually raising the clutch, helping him feel more confident and in control when moving away and dealing with junctions.
We spent several lessons practising around quieter residential streets, concentrating on developing these skills without the added pressure of busy traffic.
Changing an established habit isn’t always easy, particularly when you’ve been doing something a certain way for quite some time.
But Joe was determined!
Every Wednesday morning, he arrived ready to give it another go, gradually improving his coordination, confidence and overall driving ability.
Joe also had his own car and was able to practise between lessons with his partner, which provided valuable additional experience.
Plenty of Driving Experience Between Penicuik and Edinburgh
One of the great things about taking driving lessons from Penicuik is the variety of roads and driving conditions you encounter.
Our regular journeys towards Edinburgh and the Currie Driving Test Centre area gave Joe plenty of opportunities to develop his skills.
From navigating the busy streets and junctions around Penicuik to travelling along faster A-roads and tackling Edinburgh’s more complex road layouts, every lesson presented different challenges.
As Joe’s driving improved, I felt it was time to introduce mock driving tests.
His first mock test highlighted several areas that still needed attention, which is exactly what I use mock tests for.
They provide a realistic opportunity to experience the pressures of a driving test while identifying anything that needs further development.
Rather than becoming discouraged, Joe used the experience positively.
We continued practising, working through the areas that needed attention and gradually building towards a more consistent standard of driving.
Two Cars Before Even Passing His Driving Test!
Joe’s driving journey also included a rather unusual setback!
One Wednesday morning, he told me that his car had been involved in an accident while parked on the street.
Another vehicle had rolled down the road and collided with it, causing extensive damage.
Unfortunately, Joe’s car was subsequently written off.
This meant he temporarily lost the opportunity to practise privately between driving lessons.
It was certainly frustrating, particularly when he was working so hard towards his driving test.
However, Joe remained positive, and before long, he and his partner managed to find another car.
That meant Joe had already owned two cars before he’d even passed his driving test!
Not something every learner driver can say!
Taking the Time to Get Test Ready
Throughout our lessons, I regularly reviewed Joe’s progress and his upcoming practical driving test.
We initially rearranged his test for the summer to give him more time to develop his skills.
As the summer approached, although Joe had made considerable progress, I felt that a little more preparation would be beneficial.
Rather than rushing into a test before he was ready, we agreed to rearrange it again, this time for Tuesday 3rd November at 8 am.
My plan was to continue alternating between targeted driving lessons, practice and mock driving tests.
Initially, I thought we might eventually be able to space the lessons further apart.
However, we continued meeting most weeks, and that consistency proved valuable.
Joe gained a huge amount of driving experience during this time, gradually becoming more confident and capable of dealing with the different situations he encountered.
The important thing was that he kept progressing.
Driving Test Day at Currie – Tuesday 3rd November 2026
With the test approaching, Joe decided he’d like one additional driving lesson the day before.
We headed out on Monday morning for a final practice, and there were plenty of positives to take away.
The following morning, I collected Joe bright and early at 6:30 am, ahead of his 8 am driving test at Currie.
We spent the time before his test completing our final preparations, revisiting familiar roads and getting comfortable behind the wheel.
Arriving at Currie Driving Test Centre with around ten minutes to spare, we had time for a final chat before heading inside.
It was a busy morning, with several other candidates preparing for their driving tests.
When Joe’s examiner called his name, it was time for him to head out and put everything he’d learned into practice.
After months of early starts, lessons, mock tests and determination, the moment had finally arrived.
I watched Joe drive away with the examiner, knowing he’d put in the work and hoping everything would come together.
Around 45 minutes later, Joe returned to the test centre.
As I approached the car, the examiner delivered the fantastic news.
Joe had passed his driving test on his very first attempt!
I was absolutely delighted!
After everything Joe had been through during his driving lessons, it was a brilliant result and a thoroughly deserved achievement.
A Driving Licence That Opens Up New Opportunities
For Joe, passing his driving test means much more than simply being able to drive a car.
Working for a catering company in Loanhead, his job can involve travelling to different locations.
Having a full driving licence will provide him with greater flexibility and independence, without needing to rely on public transport, taxis or lifts from colleagues.
It also means that travelling between his home in Penicuik and Edinburgh will become much easier.
And, of course, having originally come from Manchester, Joe now has the freedom to travel further afield whenever he wishes.
After all those early Wednesday morning starts, the additional practice and the unexpected setbacks, it’s fantastic to see everything come together.
Joe was always enthusiastic, determined and a genuinely lovely person to teach.
Congratulations again, Joe! Enjoy your new driving licence, your car and all the freedom that comes with it. You’ve certainly earned it!
