Sarah – Slateford Edinburgh
Sarah started driving lessons at the end of the summer in 2014 having never driven before Sarah was a complete beginner. We drove around a very quiet housing estate to begin with, so Sarah could get used to the basic controls of the car. Sarah worked at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and said that at the beginning when we started driving lessons after a full day at work and a driving lesson she was shattered because of the concentration. Sarah stuck with it though managing to go out for an hour every week where we would progress each time. Shortly after starting, we were moving into darker evenings which gave Sarah experience driving in the dark. Between driving lessons, Sarah was working on her theory test revision so that as soon as she felt comfortable, she could sit and get that out the way. After a while, Sarah was noticeably more comfortable and coordinated in the car which started to speed up our progression. Sarah told me that learning to drive is the hardest thing that she has ever done in her life. We stuck with it week to week and tried a mock test which at first didn’t really work. As soon as we added the pressure, Sarah found it difficult to drive to her full potential. We decided that it would be best to keep the practice going and try again after a while. The next test we tried was better, but we both agreed we still needed to fix a few things. Eventually, we got to a stage where Sarah was getting very consistent and could handle a mock driving test. It was time to book her driving test and give it a go. Sarah told me that on the day she felt sick. I told her this was a good thing as it was very normal. Sarah drove very well before it and went on to pass her driving test on her first attempt. I was so happy for her as she had worked so hard to get it.
