James Dickson – Dolphinton
James got in touch about learning to drive at the end of the summer. The year before I had had the pleasure of teaching his older sister Hannah to drive. When James began his driving lessons he was still living at home down in Dolphinton, but was going to be moving into halls for his first year at Heriot Watt university the following week. We took advantage on James’ first driving lesson and drove around some of the country back roads, James did well getting used to the car, changing gears lots of steering and a number of junctions in West Linton and even a roundabout. We were off to a great start after the first driving lesson, so when resuming in Edinburgh James had enough of the basics we were ready to progress quickly. James had watched some of the videos on my webpage which helped a lot as he understood things, and had lots of questions to fill in any of the bits he wanted to learn more about. Staying at Heriot Watt this meant we were right on the Currie test route in Edinburgh which is always good as it is nice to practice in the area that you know you might be tested on in the future. James booked his driving test for the afternoon and at the time of booking it did not realise that he was going to be missing one of his three hour lectures at university. He actually seemed pleased about it as he told me he could catch up later. We turned up for the driving test on the day and James had done so well on the hour before. Everything I had asked him to do he executed perfectly, I was so impressed and relaxed that James had this! James returned and I was delighted to hear that he had passed, even though he felt that he hadn’t driven very well at all, he must have been good though otherwise he wouldn’t have passed. Well done.
