Targeted mock tests and steady weekly progress.
Eve from the Marchmont area of Edinburgh got in touch at the end of 2024 to restart driving lessons. She’d previously taken some lessons but hadn’t reached the stage of sitting a test and wanted to bring everything together with a clear plan.
With Eve’s work schedule and my availability, we locked in 7–9am weekly lessons. Through winter, the first hour was in darkness—valuable experience for Scotland’s shorter days and a great way to build real-world confidence. On her first lesson, Eve explained she felt nervous about driving; we agreed to move at her pace and keep things calm and structured.
Week by week, Eve built momentum. We focused on clutch control, which gave her far more finesse at junctions, in slow traffic, and on gradients. After covering the full syllabus and refining the details, we ran a mock driving test. She didn’t pass the first mock—but it generated a precise list of points to improve and gave her a feel for test-day pressure. We repeated the cycle: a few weeks of targeted practice, then another mock. Each time, Eve was noticeably steadier and more consistent.
When she was ready, the only challenge was finding a practical test. After months of checking, Eve secured a date in October. On the day, we left Marchmont early for one final warm-up around the Currie test area. Eve drove with control and composure—and came back with the result she’d earned: a pass with only three driver faults.
Well done, Eve. I’m delighted you’ve got your licence—enjoy the freedom on the road.
