How a 7am Lesson Schedule and Unstoppable Attitude Led to a First-Time Pass in Edinburgh
Jamie got in touch at the end of last year looking to learn to drive. With her work schedule to consider, we quickly worked out that early morning lessons suited us both perfectly. We started at 7am, picking Jamie up from her home in the Morningside area of Edinburgh and finishing each lesson at her place of work — a practical arrangement that meant learning to drive fitted neatly around her life rather than disrupting it.
When we began, it was still dark first thing in the morning. Driving in the dark brings its own challenges, but Jamie handled it brilliantly. Rather than being put off, she embraced it — and that attitude set the tone for everything that followed.
We spent the early lessons getting to grips with the foundations in the local housing estates around Morningside, building confidence and consistency before venturing further afield. Before long we were exploring the Craiglockhart and Colinton areas of Edinburgh, taking on more varied roads and greater challenges as Jamie’s skills developed.
Progress was extremely productive. Jamie was always enthusiastic and gave everything during every lesson. It wasn’t long before we had covered a lot of ground in the Currie area and the time felt right to carry out a mock driving test. Jamie was fully up for it. The mock gave us a clear picture of where she was and highlighted the areas to focus on. What stood out was how Jamie approached the debrief — she asked great questions, made sure she fully understood every fault and was determined to put things right. That kind of attitude makes a real difference.
Everything was coming together well, but there was one thing still to tick off — Jamie’s theory test. Once that was passed, we turned our attention to securing a practical test date. With the current waiting times in Edinburgh sitting at around six months, we kept a close eye out for cancellations. After finding a suitable swap, we managed to bring Jamie’s test forward by a few months, which was a great result.
In the lead-up to the test, I had an unexpected issue with my car and had to hire a different vehicle. For some learners, an unfamiliar car on test day could be unsettling — but not Jamie. She took it completely in her stride and it barely registered as an obstacle.
On the day of the test, Jamie arrived at the Currie test centre ready and focused. She passed her driving test on her first attempt — a fantastic achievement that reflects just how hard she worked throughout the entire process.
Jamie can now come and go from the Morningside area of Edinburgh whenever she likes, completely on her own terms. Well done Jamie — it was a pleasure every step of the way!
