Swanston Learner to Licensed Driver
A confident and composed performance.
Ella, from the Swanston area of Edinburgh, began driving lessons during the summer last year. She had previously started lessons with another instructor but hadn’t enjoyed the experience. At the time, I was teaching one of Ella’s friends, so we arranged to head out and give driving another go.
From the very first lesson, Ella did well and seemed far more comfortable. We focused heavily on building strong car control, particularly clutch control and smooth coordination. Before long, Ella became extremely confident and competent, developing advanced clutch control that gave her excellent command of the car in a variety of situations.
As the weeks passed, her driving continued to improve, and most importantly, she was enjoying it.
Being in sixth year at Boroughmuir High School (Fountainbridge area), Thursday afternoons worked well, as Ella often had an early finish. Starting lessons near her school gave us quick access to the Currie test area, and with Ella living in Swanston—also within the Currie area—she became very familiar with the local roads. That familiarity made a real difference in building confidence and consistency.
Ella did well securing a driving test for January, which was ideal timing. However, as is often the case, school prelim exam dates were announced—and she had two prelims scheduled on the exact same day as her driving test. Typical timing! Fortunately, we were able to rearrange, and a new test date was secured for the start of February.
In the lead-up to the test, we carried out several mock driving tests, fine-tuned weaker areas, and explored a large percentage of the Currie test routes. By the time test day arrived, confidence was high.
After one final warm-up drive, we arrived ready for Ella to show the examiner what she could do. I was delighted to hear that she had passed on her first attempt.
A fantastic achievement alongside school commitments.
Well done, Ella.
