learning to drive in Edinburgh

Owen – Edinburgh

I had the pleasure of teaching Owen who was already an experienced driver in the United States, but wanted to take on the challenge of learning how to drive a manual car on the left side of the road in the UK. Fortunately, he had the advantage of having already passed his motorbike test, which gave him some familiarity with driving on UK roads.

Although I normally teach on the Southside of Edinburgh, Owen was more than happy to travel to meet me. Our lessons were structured to be 2.5 hours long, which seemed to be the perfect amount of time for Owen to make progress and gain confidence behind the wheel.

One of the main skills Owen had to master was managing the clutch of the car, which was new to him. However, he was able to transfer some of the skills he learned from his motorbike experience to the car, which helped him progress quickly.

We did a mock driving test to prepare him for the real thing, and the final week of practice leading up to his actual driving test went exceptionally well. I was confident that Owen was well-prepared and would perform well on test day.

And perform well he did! Owen passed his driving test on his first attempt with no problems, and even received compliments from the examiner. It was a great accomplishment, and now he has the freedom to drive around the UK with confidence in both manual and automatic cars.

Overall, it was a pleasure to teach Owen and I was really impressed with how he got on.
